Nexus Neurorecovery Center

Vocational Rehabilitation Services

Nexus Health Systems believes each person has the right to live and work in an environment that provides the greatest degree of independence and highest quality of life possible. At our Neurorecovery Center, each patient enrolled in our Vocational Rehabilitation Program receives a comprehensive vocational assessment to determine a customized treatment plan consistent with their unique interests, capabilities, and short and long-term goals.

The Vocational Rehabilitation Program provides ample opportunities for patients to develop a set of skills to include on a resume with the goal of returning to competitive, meaningful employment. Whether inpatient or outpatient, our program enhances physical endurance, cognitive skills, positive worker traits and marketable skills, while complimenting the goals set forth by the physical, occupation, and speech therapies.

Vocational Evaluation

We conduct a comprehensive assessment of an individual’s vocational potential to determine a customized program to meet his or her respective psycho-social adjustment needs. Incorporated in the assessment are situational work samples and testing equipment allowing for multi-day, on-site vocational evaluations to assess current interests, skills, aptitudes, abilities, and goals. This personal information helps develop and implement vocational and return to work plans.

Transferable Skills Analyses (TSAs) are also conducted and based on the results of the testing help to identify potential and viable career alternatives and options.

  •    Return to Work Planning

Community re-entry is based on a patient’s successful performance in vocational assessments. Outcomes of competitive or non-competitive employment include:

    • Tangible paycheck
    • Regained sense of identity
    • Improved self-esteem as a contributing member of society
    • Removal of the social stigma of being unemployed
    • Restoration of a long-lost sense of pride
    • Freedom from social isolation
    • Alleviating the root cause of the depression and anxiety
    • Decreased stress
    • Improved personal relationships with significant others

Nexus’ Career and Employment Specialist provides job readiness training, and resumes and cover letters are developed, practice applications are completed, job matching and target employers are identified, personal job searches are taught and conducted, practice interviews are performed, and professional dressing and grooming is reinforced. Personal and Social Adjustment Training is also implemented to assist the patients with keeping the jobs.

Our Neurorecovery Center and the Career and Employment Specialist consistently build and maintain relationships with employers within the community. National chains are targeted for patients returning to locations outside of the Houston area as well.

After employment is obtained, patients work with a job coach who provides on-the-job support services ensuring the patient has a successful transition into employment. These efforts also provide education for the employer regarding the nature of the disabilities, and encompass follow-up services to maintain employee and employer satisfaction.
